Never Enough Time: A Practical and Spiritual Guide

$86.77 $48.50

Most of us struggle with the “time famine”–the pervasive feeling of never having enough time. Whether we work three jobs or none, have many children or none, or live in a huge city or a small town, most of us have the feeling there is always more to do than we’re able, more time required than we can give. In Never Enough Time, Rev. Donna Schaper helps us think through the practical and spiritual elements of the time famine and helps us instead aim for a feast. Schaper’s advice centers around our mind-set–understanding both the structural and personal reasons we feel so pressed, clarifying what’s important to us or not, and setting realistic expectations, while enriching the time we have. The book goes beyond the idea of “Sabbath keeping” to offer suggestions for all parts of life–particularly the busy moments. Schaper draws on her years ministering to people across all walks of life to show that the time famine cuts across race, class, and gender lines to touch almost everyone. She offers practical and spiritual suggestions that won’t magically give us more time, but can help us live better with the time we have.

Healing Justice: Holistic Self-Care for Change Makers

$109.00 $61.50

In the context of multiple forms of global economic, social, and cultural oppression, along with intergenerational trauma, burnout, and public services retrenchment, this book offers a framework and set of inquiries and practices for social workers, activists, community organizers, counselors, and other helping professionals. Healing justice, a term that has emerged in social movements in the last decade, is taught as a practice of connecting to the whole self, what many are conditioned to ignore — the body, mind-heart, spirit, community, and natural world. Drawing from the East-West modalities of mindfulness, yoga, and Ayurveda, the author introduces six capabilities — mindfulness and compassion; critical thinking and curiosity; and effort and equanimity — which can guide practitioners on a transformative and empowering journey that can ultimately make them and their colleagues more effective in their work. Using case studies, critical analysis, and skill sharing, self-care is presented as an act of resistance to disconnection, marginalization, and internalized oppression. Healing justice is a trauma-informed practice that empowers social practitioners to cultivate the conditions that might allow them to feel more connected to themselves, their clients, colleagues, and communities. The book also engages critically with self-care practices, including investigation into the science of mindfulness, cultural appropriation, and the commodification of self-care. The message is clear that mindfulness-based practices are not a panacea for personal, inter-personal, or political problems. But, they can put practitioners in a more authentic and powerful place to work from, which is particularly important in a world where there is more connection to technology, ideologies, and people who share one’s beliefs, and less connection to the natural world, people who are different, and the parts of oneself that one tends to reject. The book also offers suggestions for how to share self-care practices with community members who have less access to wellness.

About the Author

For more than 30 years, Dr. Hopper has been involved with Student Success at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. She is a nationally known lecturer and workshop leader on topics such as learning how to learn, learning styles, memory, time management, effective classroom techniques, and using technology in the classroom. Carolyn’s Study Skills website (http://capone.mtsu.edu/studskl/) has been visited by more than a million people! When asked to describe her teaching style, Carolyn says: “I am first of all enthusiastic about learning how to learn. I get excited about learning and hopefully my students catch the spirit. My classes are a combination of lecture supported by many visuals and hands-on activities. Skills for being successful in college are learned by doing. So, once students understand a concept, my aim for them is to develop the skills by practice and make modification to the skills that will work for them. A student in my class can expect homework due every class period. My style may seem casual and somewhat laid back, but each class is carefully planned with goals and objectives in mind. I am extremely demanding but would like to think that I am patient. I try to make sure that everything we do in class is backed up on the website.”
