About the Author
Dr. Abhilash is a scientist in the biohydrometallurgy lab of the Waste Recycling and Utilisation Group of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, and assistant professor, AcSIR (Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research)-NML, India. He earned a degree in microbiology from Nagpur University, a postgraduate degree specializing in mineral biotechnology from Bangalore University, and a PhD (engineering) from Jadavpur University. Dr. Abhilash has authored one book and edited two compendium volumes, published over 65 papers in journals and conference proceedings, and presented over 30 papers at various symposia/colloquiums. He is also on the editorial board of international journals and a reviewer for journals in his field. Dr. B.D. Pandey is chief scientist, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur, and professor, AcSIR (Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research)-NML, India. He earned his PhD in metal extraction and separation by solvent extraction and metal complexation from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He has contributed extensively in the area of extraction of non-ferrous metals from both primary and secondary resources, including the extraction of rare earths. His research areas include chemical beneficiation, hydro- and bio-hydro-metallurgy and bio-remediation, sulphation roasting and waste processing, recycling, and environmental management. He has published over 200 papers in journals and conference proceedings, and holds 10 patents. Dr. K.A. Natarajan is currently a NASI (National Academy of Sciences) senior scientist-Platinum Jubilee Fellow and emeritus professor at the Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He earned his MS and PhD specializing in mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgy from the University of Minnesota, USA. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore conferred on him the degree of doctor of science in 1992 for his pioneering research contributions in minerals bioprocessing. He is on the editorial board of several international journals in the area of mineral processing, and has published over 300 papers in leading journals.
This book is for readers with some background in science, concerning the search for drugs, starting from molecular diversity in nature or molecular wilderness. Drug molecules may be used as such, or as starting points for improved drugs obtained from the interface of chemistry and biology. In some cases, the essential molecular features for drug properties from natural molecules may be identified and modified to more effective ones. In other cases, nature provides the targets, such as essential enzymes from infectious microorganisms, from which synthetic drugs can be designed. The mechanisms of action of drugs can be discerned by studying target-drug interactions. Nature may fight back, as in cases when microorganisms become resistant to drugs, but we can again use the chemistry-biology interface to obtain drugs which overcome the resistance. The battle goes on, hopefully with victory for both humans and balance of nature. About the Author
Prof. Yongyuth Yuthavong is senior research fellow at the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) of Thailand. While working at Mahidol University, Thailand, he was given the “Outstanding Scientist of Thailand” Award (1984) for his research on malaria biochemistry. In 2004, he received the Nikkei Asia Prize for Science, Technology and Innovation from Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc., Japan, for his work on antimalarial drug targets. He is a former Minister of Science and Technology of Thailand (2006-2008) and was the first president of NSTDA (1992-1998). He is now involved in the development of drugs against drug-resistant malaria as well as policy issues for science and technology, and education in general. He has special interest in introducing science and technology to young people.

G. Tyler Miller has written 62 textbooks for introductory courses in environmental science, basic ecology, energy, and environmental chemistry. Since 1975, Miller’s books have been the most widely used textbooks for environmental science in the United States and throughout the world. They have been used by almost three million students and have been translated into eight languages. Miller has a professional background in chemistry, physics, and ecology. He has a PhD from the University of Virginia and has received two honorary doctoral degrees for his contributions to environmental education. He taught college for 20 years, developed one of the nation’s first environmental studies programs, and developed an innovative interdisciplinary undergraduate science program before deciding to write environmental science textbooks full time in 1975.
