Experimental Psychology 10th Edition
Kantowitz, Roediger, and Elmes, all prominent researchers, take an example-based approach to the fundamentals of research methodology. The text is organized by topic–such as research in human factors, learning, thinking, and problem solving–and the authors discuss and clarify research methods in the context of actual research conducted in these specific areas. This unique feature helps students connect the concepts of sound methodology with their practical applications. Carefully selected real-world examples allow students to see for themselves the issues and problems that can occur in conducting research. More importantly, students develop a sense of how to anticipate and adjust for problems in their own research. Now adapted for the Europe, Middle East and African market, Gerard Egan’s The Skilled Helper: A Client-Centred Approach teaches students a proven step-by-step counselling process to enable them to become confident and competent helpers. Internationally recognised for its emphasis on the collaborative nature of the therapist-client relationship and the vital importance of a client-centred approach, the text offers a practical three-stage model which drives client problem-managing and opportunity-developing action. The book integrates the most relevant aspects of different theoretical orientations (humanistic, cognitive, cognitive-behavioural, and solution-focused) into a pragmatic approach to helping.
An edited collection of readings exploring sociological and social psychological analysis of extreme situations
From Slavery to 9/11: Readings in the Sociology and Social Psychology of Extreme Situations explores the social structure of total institutions and extreme situations and survival and coping mechanisms used by the people who have been affected by these institutions and events.
Topics include many of the defining events of the 19th and 20th centuries and the beginning of the 21st century: institutionalized slavery; genocidal atrocities and the Holocaust; September 11, 2001; and Hurricane Katrina.
Upon completing this book, readers will be able to:
- Explore historical and contemporary events
- Make connections between the institutions and events explored in the book
- Understand how people in total institutions, survivors of man-made disasters, and victims of natural disasters cope with their experiences

New and emerging directions in pharmaceutical research to better treat schizophrenia
Although the dopamine hypothesis has been the cornerstone of schizophrenia therapeutics, it is clear that dopamine-based approaches do not treat all aspects of the disease. Moreover, many schizophrenia patients fail to respond to current antipsychotics. Integrating chemistry, biology, and pharmacology, this book explores emerging directions in pharmaceutical research for drug targeting and discovery in order to find more effective treatments for schizophrenia, one of the most serious and widespread psychiatric diseases.
Targets and Emerging Therapies for Schizophrenia presents the basics of schizophrenia, drug targets for the disease, and potential new drugs and therapeutics. It begins with a discussion of prevalence and etiology. Then, it describes therapies such as dopamine agonists and phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors as well as growing research aimed at addressing untreated symptoms. Next, the authors discuss receptor modulators, inhibitors, and targeting strategies for drug discovery. Both the neurobiological and chemical aspects of all major pharmacological targets are examined.
With contributions from an international team of pioneering pharmaceutical researchers, this book compiles the current knowledge in the field, setting the stage for new breakthroughs in the treatment of schizophrenia. Targets and Emerging Therapies for Schizophrenia:
- Provides a comprehensive resource for neuro-drug discovery and the development of molecular targets for schizophrenia treatment
- Draws from chemistry, biology, and pharmacology for more effective drug targeting and discovery
- Explores a wide range of receptors and molecular targets, including dopamine, PDEs, and neuropeptides
With Targets and Emerging Therapies for Schizophrenia as their guide, drug discovery and development scientists have the information they need to advance their own research so that new, more effective treatments for schizophrenia will soon be a reality.
