New Directions in Locally Compact Groups
This collection of expository articles by a range of established experts and newer researchers provides an overview of the recent developments in the theory of locally compact groups. It includes introductory articles on totally disconnected locally compact groups, profinite groups, p-adic Lie groups and the metric geometry of locally compact groups. Concrete examples, including groups acting on trees and Neretin groups, are discussed in detail. An outline of the emerging structure theory of locally compact groups beyond the connected case is presented through three complementary approaches: Willis’ theory of the scale function, global decompositions by means of subnormal series, and the local approach relying on the structure lattice. An introduction to lattices, invariant random subgroups and L2-invariants, and a brief account of the Burger-Mozes construction of simple lattices are also included. A final chapter collects various problems suggesting future research directions.

About the Author
Frank R. Giordano began his teaching career at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, where he served for 21 years, including seven years as professor and head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He currently is a Professor of Defense Analysis and Operations Research at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. He has served as project director for several major National Science Foundation grants devoted to modeling, including one to initiate a high school modeling contest (the HiMCM). For the past 15 years, he has served as the director of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Frank R. William P. Fox is a professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Previously; he was an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of operations research while serving in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA) for more than 12 years. He also served as the Chair of Mathematics at Francis Marion University for eight years before coming to the Naval Postgraduate School. Dr. Fox has taught a variety of mathematics courses in his career, and his areas of interest include mathematical modeling, optimization, statistics, and simulations. He holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, a master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Ph.D. from Clemson University.
Steven B. Horton is professor of operations research and acting deputy head in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point. He has taught a variety of mathematics courses at West Point since joining the faculty in 1991. Dr. Horton holds his undergraduate degree from USMA, master’s degrees from Georgia Tech and the National Defense University, and a Ph.D. from Georgia Tech.

About the Author
Dave Sobecki was born and raised in Cleveland, and started college at Bowling Green State University in 1984 majoring in creative writing. Eleven years later, he walked across the graduation stage to receive a PhD in math, a strange journey indeed. After two years at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, he came home to Ohio, accepting a tenure-track job at the Hamilton campus of Miami University. Dave has won a number of teaching awards in his career, and more recently has turned his attention to writing textbooks. Dave is in a happy place where his love of teaching meshes perfectly with his childhood dream of writing. He lives in Fairfield, Ohio with his lovely wife Cat, and fuzzy dogs Macleod and Tessa. When not teaching or writing, Dave’s passions include Ohio State football, Cleveland Indians baseball, heavy metal music, travel, golf, and home improvement.
