Synthetic Biology: Industrial and Environmental Applications 1st Edition
This is the only book to focus on industrial and environmental applications of synthetic biology, covering 17 of the most promising uses in the areas of biofuel, bioremediation and biomaterials. The contributions are written by experts from academia, non-profit organizations and industry, outlining not only the scientific basics but also the economic, environmental and ethical impact of the new technologies. This makes it not only suitable as supplementary material for students but also the perfect companion for policy makers and funding agencies, if they are to make informed decisions about synthetic biology. Largely coordinated by Markus Schmidt, a policy adviser, and the only European to testify in front of the bioethics commission of the Obama administration.
About the Author
Markus Schmidt has an interdisciplinary background with an education in electronic and biomedical engineering, biology (MSc) and risk research (PhD). His research interests include risk assessment, the science-society interface, and technology assessment (TA) of novel bio-, nano- and converging technologies. Since 2005 he pioneered synthetic biology safety and ELSI research in Europe. See: www.markusschmidt.eu for details.
APPLIED CALCULUS FOR THE MANAGERIAL, LIFE, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES: A BRIEF APPROACH, Tenth Edition balances modern applications, solid pedagogy, and the latest technology to engage students and keep them motivated in the course. Suitable for majors and non-majors alike, the text uses an intuitive approach that teaches concepts through examples drawn from real-life situations from students’ fields of interest. In addition, insightful Portfolios highlight the careers of real people and discuss how they incorporate math into their daily professional activities. Numerous exercises, including a Diagnostic Test, ensure that students have a concrete understanding of concepts before advancing to the next topic. The text’s pedagogical features coupled with an exciting array of supplements equip students with the tools they need to make the most of their study time and to succeed in the course.
About the Author
Soo T. Tan has published numerous papers in Optimal Control Theory and Numerical Analysis. He received his S.B. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. “One of the most important lessons I learned from my early experience teaching these courses is that many of the students come into these courses with some degree of apprehension. This awareness led to the intuitive approach I have adopted in all of my texts.”

INTRODUCTION TO MARINE BIOLOGY sparks curiosity about the marine world and provides an understanding of the process of science. Taking an ecological approach and intended for non-science majors, the text provides succinct coverage of the content while the photos and art clearly illustrate key concepts. Studying is made easy with phonetic pronunciations, a running glossary of key terms, end-of-chapter questions, and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter. The open look and feel of INTRODUCTION TO MARINE BIOLOGY and the enhanced art program convey the beauty and awe of life in the ocean. Twenty spectacular photos open the chapters, piquing the motivation and attention of students, and over 60 photos and pieces of art are new or redesigned.
- The process of science and the way scientists work in the field is emphasized throughout ntroduction to Marine Biology.
- “In Perspective” tables found in each of the marine organism chapters (microorganisms, multicellular producers, sponges, molluscs, fishes, reptiles and birds, marine mammals), summarize key ecological, biological, and taxonomic data for each organism.
- Strong coverage of the physiology and ecology of major marine groups including microbes, viruses, plankton, multicellular algae, plants, and animals.
- CourseMate brings course concepts to life with interactive learning, study, and exam preparation tools including quizzes, flashcards, videos, and more.
Inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet, Edward O. Wilson has distilled sixty years of teaching into a book for students, young and old. Wilson threads these twenty-one letters, each richly illustrated, with autobiographical anecdotes that illuminate his career – both his successes and his failures – and his motivations for becoming a biologist. At a time when our survival is more than ever linked to our understanding of science, Wilson insists that success in the sciences does not depend on mathematical skill but rather a passion for finding a problem and solving it. From the collapse of stars to the exploration of rain forests and the oceans’ depths, Wilson instills a love of the innate creativity of science and a respect for the human being’s modest place in the planet’s ecosystem, in his readers.
